Boondocking @ Steer Pasture Overlook Dispersed Campground, AKA “The Wall”. Buffalo Gap Nation Grassland, Badlands, South Dakota. #RVLIFESTYLE

Alrighty. Had to hunker down due to really bad storms last night. Stayed at the Sioux Falls Walmart. No issues, however it was pretty packed with RVs. Got another early start and drove 4 hours or so west on I-90 to here… Steer Pasture Overlook Dispersed Campground in the Buffalo Gap Nation Grassland. Just on the edge of the Bandlands NP. I’m about 6 miles south of Wall, SD. Yes this is area shown in many movies and most recently the academy award winning “Nomadland”. Stopped off to see the “world famous” corn palace on the way. I didn’t bother going in as IMO looked super “corny”. I could be totally wrong, but for some reason…..I doubt it. Lol.

Anyway. I’m not one to follow everyone else and I really had no plans to go here…mostly just because I thought this place would be jammed packed full of “newbies” and ridiculous. It was packed in the one part 2 miles south of me at what’s called “Nomad View” area. People were pretty much on top of each other and looked to be a hot mess. Not my style…so I turned around and started heading north. Kept going till the road started getting a little bad with rocks, ruts and some mud. Started seeing a lot less people. Found a level spot with a spectacular view and set up shop. Nearest neighbor is more than a football field away. I’ll never understand why people just settle and pack in like sardines somewhere…..when all you need to do is take a little bit of a chance to find a much better spot. Well that’s my opinion….maybe people like camping next to total strangers like in a campground. Who am I to judge. To each their own….I guess!

But wow. I’m glad I decided to come here. What a view! This is why I love the west. Weather is perfect. Not hot. Low humidity. Full sun for solar. Quiet. 30 OTA TV channels. VZW is on fire @ 104 mbps down/5 up. AT&T getting it done too….. 31 mbps down but only 2 up. Free. No services. Signs posted no fires and to pack in and pack out….i.e. no garbage service. Site is managed by the National Forest Service.

I’m facing East. Sunrise tomorrow should be postcard type of material. I will likely stay a few days at least. There is 14 day max stay.

This spot right here will forever remind me to keep an open mind to things….as I really was almost against it. I’m glad I ignored my stubborn self!
